지금은 토요일 밤 9시에요 

단골 손님들이 섞여 들어오고 

내 옆에는 진토닉을 즐기고 있는 한 노인이 앉아 있어요

그 노인이 말하기를, "이봐 청년, 노래 한 곡 연주해 주지 그래? 

어떻게 부르는지 잘 모르지만 

슬프고 감미로운 노래야. 내가 젊었을 땐 그 노랠 전부 알았었는데..."

노래 한 곡 불러줘요 당신은 피아노맨이잖아요 

오늘밤 우리한테 노래 한곡 불러줘요 

우린 모두 노래가 듣고 싶어요 

당신은 우릴 기분 좋게 해주잖아요

바에 있는 존은 내 친구죠 

나한테 공짜로 술을 한잔 갖다 줬어요. 

그는 농담도 잘 받아들이고 알아서 담배불도 붙여주죠. 

하지만 그는 여기가 아닌 다른 곳에 있어야 했어요 

"여기서 정말 미칠 것 같애" 그가 이렇게 말할 때 

그의 얼굴에선 미소가 사라졌어요 

"여기서 벗어날 수만 있다면 난 분명히 영화배우가 될 수 있었을텐데..." 

그리고, 폴은 진짜 지체 높은소설가에요 

그는 부인과 같이 지내는 시간이 별로 없었고, 

지금 데이비와 얘길 하고 있어요 데이비는 아직 해군이고

아마  평생 그럴지도 모르죠 

그리고 웨이트리스는 사업가가 조금씩 술에 취하자, 

돈을 울궈 내려고 하는군요 

맞아요, 모두들 함께 외로움이라고들 부르는 술을 마시고 있어요 

하지만, 혼자 마시는 것보단 그게 낫죠. 

토요일 치곤 손님이 많군요 

매니저가 날 보고 미소를 짓는군요

손님들이 날 보러 여기에 온다는걸 알고 있기 때문이죠. 

잠시라도 삶을 잊기 위해서. 

피아노 소리는 마치 축제 분위기 같고, 

마이크는 맥주 냄새가 나요. 

사람들은 바에 앉아 내 항아리에 돈을 넣어줘요 

그리고 말하죠. "이봐, 당신 여기서 뭐하고 있는거야?"
